RIMBAUD

SYDNEY

A 90 seat restaurant. The original tenancy was open to the street and divided into an indoor and outdoor space. To unify these spaces and create a scale more consistent with intimate dining, a row of giant rectangular lanterns was introduced. These, the main light source of the restaurant, are positioned centrally over the dining areas and create a warm glow while swaying gently in the breeze. To the rear is a glowing amber wall with banquette seating.

The challenge was to entice customers up from street level, while providing intimacy once inside. The illuminated pebble screen to the street creates a uniquely identifiable presence for the restaurant (minimal signage was used) while screening the under-table area from passers by. The screen is lit to create an opaque landscaped element from the street, while appearing translucent from the inside.
