MELANESIAN HOTEL

LAE, PNG

A new seven storey development which includes a mix of hotel rooms and apartments, bar and restaurants, plus function and conference centre.  Set in a lush garden setting, the architectural design envisages a striking contemporary building incorporating modern interpretations of traditional Melanisian patterns and motifs.

The rectangular building is split in two by a central glazed atrium over the main entrance. An over sailing roof echoes the zigzag of tapa designs and provides generous shading to the building walls. Long angled horizontal sunscreens are cut through with diagonal slashes evocative of the tapered forms of palm tree trunks and palm leaf shadows. A pitched roof Porte Cochere remembers traditional roof forms and is supported on heavy timber columns/beams and carved fretwork.
